The fascinating tale of how Bachata, a music genre once vilified by the Latin upper class as the bawdy ghetto soundtrack of brothels and vulgar cabarets, came to rival meringue and salsa as the preferred music of the Latin world. Through performances, first-person interviews and telling verite scenes with guitarist and guitarist and singer/songwriter Luis Vargas - and his fellow bachateros, viewers are treated to not only a bittersweet success story on one immigrant artist, but an understanding of this once-maligned music style. Following Vargas' poignant journey from New York City back to his hometown of Santa Maria in the Dominican Republic, award-winning director and producer Alex Wolfe tells the story of Bachata's transformation from a "song of bitterness" to an emblem of Dominican national pride.

'La casa del Ritmo' (2012)

This Kickstarter-funded film is a compelling story about Grammy-winning Venezuelan funksters Los Amigos Invisibles, from their early days playing in Caracas, Venezuela, to being discovered by David Byrne of Talking Heads and their rise to international stardom. The viewer experiences their story as it intertwines with a live performance filmed at the Highline Ballroom in New York City in March 2011. The band, with the same original 6 members, celebrates 20 years in 2011. The film has 600 backers from countries as diverse as Venezuela, Australia, Spain, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, France, Switzerland and the USA.

Prueba de Fondo explores the daily lives of a group of marathon runners from the Central Highlands of Peru who aim to break more than just their records. Around the practice of athletics in the Andes, many stories of perseverance are woven. One of these is the story of Inés Melchor, a multi-time Pan American champion who, in the past two years, has faced unexpected defeat and the need to rebuild herself.

'Fernanda y Bernarda' (Spain)

Fernanda por soleá and Bernarda por bulería. These inseparable sisters were two of the greatest singers who have ever existed, representatives of the most deep gypsy singing. The feature-length documentary Fernanda y Bernarda brings back these fundamental figures of our country's culture, traveling from Utrera to Madrid, and from there to the 1964 World Fair in New York and the great stages of Paris. The musical biopic argues why it makes perfect sense to consider them the Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday of our country. Even Camarón knew that at a flamenco party they were invincible.
