Miriam Lies | Miriam miente
Dir. Natalia Cabral & Oriol Estrada | 2018 | Dominican Republic, Spain | 90 min.
For the shy teen Miriam, life shouldn’t be much more than sunny afternoons spent with best friend Jennifer, talking about boys and making preparations for their upcoming joint quinceañera party. However, her aim to invite her online boyfriend to the party doesn’t quite go to plan, and Miriam is caught between what she wants to be and her upwardly mobile mother’s aspirations for her. Miriam cannot fail to see the implications of being a Black woman in a society obsessed with Western standards of beauty, and a quiet middle-class world of good intentions will begin to crumble. It’s painful to witness the corrosive effects endemic and internalised racism has on all concerned, but Miriam is bound to win your heart in this topical exploration of identity politics, making Cabral & Estrada’s fiction feature debut a terrific and unusual film about the pains and joys of growing up.
The screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with the filmmaker Natalia Cabral.
