The festival opens on Tuesday, October 8th with Venezuelan guitar virtuoso Aleph Aguiar and his septet, playing a sophisticated mix of contemporary and straight-ahead jazzlanguage, influenced by 70s bop organ, Venezuelan Joropo and Tambor de Barlovento, samba and boogaloo.
On Wednesday, Brazilian British drummer Fabio de Oliveira's much anticipated new project, Babo Moreno, whose debut singles have been generating the attention of Brazilian music fans and jazzheads alike.
On Thursday, October 10 th , a UK premiere: renowned flamenco jazz pianist Mélodie Gimard and cantaora (flamenco vocalist) Naike Ponce, a Latin Grammy nominee, present Háblame: a unique all-star and all-female quartet consisting of a mix of their artistic visions and sentiments around the art of flamenco, through a selection of original music and some revisited classics by the likes of Paco de Lucía.
The weekend is dedicated to Cuban musics, with three very distinct visions: at 7pm on Friday October 11 th , New York based Afrocuban jazz star Dayramir González plays a piano solo show titled “The Art of Cuban Piano” in which he deploys the
various modalities of piano language of Cuba throughout the last hundred years through a personal, virtuosic and tasteful lens.
At 10pm, festival curator and internationally renowned pianist and composer Eliane Correa is back with her high-octane, female-centric 12-piece Cuban timba fusion orchestra La Evolución, the only orchestra of its kind in the UK whose
2022 album Signo de Fuego received 4 and 5 star reviews from Jazzwise and Songlines respectively. And finally on Saturday 12 th of October, the fifth edition of AfroCuba:Jazz Sessions, a semi-improvised exclusive collaboration where renowned Cuban
percussionist Hammadi Valdés's Afro-Cuban folkloric percussion trio are given one day in a rehearsal studio with a UK jazz trio to prepare a musical conversation to bring to the
stage. This year's collaborating musicians are saxophonist Tamar Osborn (Sarathy Korwar, Flock), pianist Al MacSween (Kefaya, Nubya Garcia) and bassist Ruth Goller (Shabaka Hutchings, Rokia Traoré).
