THE BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH (Live) - Band on stage around 3pm, playing 1-2 Live Sets

The Brotherhood Of Breath has always been a community. The recent concerts in 2018 and 2019 at the spiritual home of South African and West Indian music in London, The 100 Club, saw the gathering of the artists and families and fans around this beacon of light in otherwise dark times – family members Barbara Pukwana and Maxine McGregor and artists such as Julian Bahula were greeted and acknowledged from the stand as they would be in traditional village life.

The Brotherhood and its Disciples and Ambassadors wish also to bring new audiences to the music, and to play more regularly, and in new venues both in and around London, and also nationally.

We have always felt that the freedom of expression inherent in the music and delivery of this legendary band, and indeed all South African jazz music Christopher Columbus Ngcukana, Jazz Epistles, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Mongezi Feza to Julian Bahula and Johnny Dyani, Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor to Russell Herman, Abdullah Ibrahim and Bheki Mseleku and current young artists in S.A. such a s Bokhani Dyer creates an ideal environment for young musicians to find their wings, be inspired and take flight, ecstatically, creatively and safely!

The Brotherhood of Breath has moved through many incarnations over five decades, and we are determined to burn the flame brighter than ever now, to ensure its continuance with new generations of great UK talent available to take deputy positions in the band, ensuring our festival and club stages will benefit from these joyous and inspiring rhythms, melodies and arrangements for another 50 years.

“Some of the most vital and life-affirming big band jazz ever played” Nick Halstead - Jazzwise

“A heartfelt reunion of one of the most influential modern bands in jazz - the obvious infectious enjoyment and rapport of the musicians was met with rapturous applause and appreciation by the capacity audience" - Kevin LeGendre - Jazzwise

“The show was a joyous celebration of music McGregor and his fellow exiles brought to the UK. The full house meant it was standing room only, and the rich rhythmic swing had many people dancing, and the rest of us moving too. It just wasn't possible to stand still.” – Patrick Hadfield
