Duarte cuts an unusual figure as a fadista; his dressed-down approach aligns with fado’s nineteenth century origins.

His own compositions are inspired by his clients in his day-job as a psychologist. In singing about the struggles of real people he has worked with, Duarte’s mission is to listen to life and to keep the soul of fado real: ‘I’m married to psychology but fado is my mistress’, he confesses.

Born in Évora, Duarte started singing fado aged 7; in 2006 he won the Amália Rodrigues Foundation Revelation Prize. On stage, he delights audiences with his subtle vocal styling, an infectious empathetic joy, and an ability not to take himself too seriously.  Despite – or because of – this, Duarte is one of the most prominent male voices of a new generation of fado singers.
