In November, the HELENA SOLBERG CINECLUB screens the adorable documentary Pulsations, in which the director Manoela Ziggiatti seeks what inspires and motivates our lives. Depicting intimate encounters with her family and close friends, the film builds a delicate narrative about the meaning of being alive. The screening will be specially video-introduced by the Brazilian film scholar, film critic and filmmaker Marcelo Ikeda.
PULSATIONS | PULSAÇÕES
Dir. Manoela Ziggiatti | 2011 | Brazil | 73 min. | Portuguese with English subtitles
Behind the camera, one listens to the director Manoela Ziggiatti talking to family and friends about their deepest motivations: what they desire, what their dreams are, their plans for the future, their hopes. It starts in the privacy of her kitchen, with her mother opening up about her life and wounds. She will do the same with her father, grandmother and various other friends.
The film is based on a fundamental philosophical concern: to ask ourselves about the meaning of our existence, why we live, what we do with our days. The beauty of Pulsations lies in its subtlety: the unpretentious way the director shows something very profound and mysterious – the emptiness of our present lives, the lack of great aspirations and ideals, the pragmatism or inertia that make us live without reflecting on our own essence. Exploring the eventful course that moves and weaves our lives, the narrative flows naturally and involves both interviewees and audience, revealing in Manoela a great conversationalist who follows the steps of late Brazilian filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho, the greatest in this realm.
Pulsations had its world premiere at the prestigious Guadalajara International Film Festival and was screened in several events worldwide, such as the Uruguay International Film Festival, the EDOC: Encuentros del Otro Cine (Ecuador), the Lima Film Festival, the São Paulo Latin American Film Festival, and the Rendez-vous du Cinéma Lusophone à Paris. The film was also part of the programming catalogue of Canal Brasil, a cable TV channel dedicated to Brazilian cinema and other audio-visual productions.
There will be drinks to welcome the audience, kindly provided by Go Brazil Wines & Spirits, and the screening will start at 6.30pm.
