Corona beer halts brewing over coronavirus

Since the start of the virus crisis, Corona beer has been the punchline of jokes and memes, and an online rumour said sales in the US dropped by about 40 percent after the outbreak. The Mexican brewer of Corona beer says it is suspending production because of the health emergency in the country over the COVID-19 pandemic. Grupo Modelo - whose brands also include Pacifico and Modelo - said the measure was in line with the Mexican government's order to suspend all non-essential activities until April 30 to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Brazilian left demands Bolsonaro resign over coronavirus response

Some of the most distinguished members of the Brazilian left have demanded Jair Bolsonaro’s resignation in a biting declaration that criticised what they called his cynical and criminally irresponsible handling of the coronavirus crisis. Brazil’s far-right president has enraged large sections of society in recent days by downplaying the virus and wilfully undermining efforts to slow its advance with shutdowns and quarantines. On Sunday Bolsonaro ignored his own health minister’s call for physical distancing and hit the streets of Brazil’s capital, declaring: “We’ll all die one day.”

Coronavirus: Peru limits movement by gender to stem spread

Peru has begun enforcing strict new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease, restricting public movement by gender. Men can only leave home on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; women can do so on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, no-one is allowed out. Panama introduced similar restrictions earlier this week. Peru has recorded more than 1,400 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 55 related deaths.

Spain announces €200 billion relief package against effects of coronavirus

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday afternoon announced a relief package of €200 billion to fight the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis. The measures include delaying mortgage payments, easing social security contributions and allowing employees who need to care for dependent relatives to reduce their workday by as much as 100%.

Race Across The World: Latin America

During this lockdown, make sure to catch Race Across the World on BBC or Iplayer. Five pairs of travellers participate in an epic race that will take them from Meixoco City to Ushuaia in Argentina. However, there is a catch, the pairs cannot take planes, must leave behind their smartphones and credit cards, and will not have access to the internet. Provided only with the cash equivalent of their airfare from their starting destination to the finishing line, they must find innovative ways to manage their budget and conduct their journey. If they run out of money, they must earn some more to continue the journey. The duos must also pass through five checkpoints along the way.

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas Set Triple Jump World Record: 15.43 m

Previously, in 2004, the Russian Tatyana Lebedeva set the triple jump indoor world record at 15,36 meters. Venezuela’s 24-year-old athlete Yulimar Rojas Friday set a new triple jump indoor world record in Madrid, Spain, with a 15.43-meter mark.
