Spotlight on...L-Gante

Ahead of his debut London appearance this Friday we profile the pioneer of 'RKT' - a musical genre that stems from mixing reggaetón beats and cumbia villera sounds, a style very particular to Argentina, with heavy tones from the Buenos Aires villa (slums). For Argentines who had always been used to the white middle class looking music stars like Fito Paez, Spinetta, Charly Garcia, L-Gante was different...the musical ambassador of the villa, which has proved massively popular. He is currently one of Argentina's biggest artists with 5 million IG followers and over a billion streams.

L-Gante first started making music at the age of 13 and by the age of 15 was  recording music with the computers provided by the Argentine Government's Connect Equality plan.

L Gante’s vision was to make the RKT more popular. RKT mixed reggaetón, trap and cumbia villera, originally known as mixed cumbia, music brought to Argentina's slums by Bolivian, Paraguayan and Peruvian immigrants in the 90s, and scorned on for many years by the Argentine music industry.

L Gante grew up with this music and incorporated it into his beats. In 2016 L-Gante sent his songs to the well-known producer DT. Bilardo and began regularly working with him on popular like "Aleteo 420", "Pistola"  and "Enrolo y quemar" among others.

According to Argentine urban artist manager Reina, when L-Gante appeared, for Argentines who had always been used to the white middle class looking rockero music stars like Fito Paes, Spinetta, Charly Garcia, he was different...the musical ambassador of the villa (guetto). "He is del pueblo. He acts and dresses like a proper representation of modern Argentina."

Although slow at first, L-Gante released his first professionally recorded song called "A Escondidas" on YouTube in 2017. In the following year he achieved even greater success with the singles "Uno más uno" and "Gucci".

In 2019 L-Gante upped his work ethic and released various tunes with other artists including singles like "Tik Tok", "Pal Piso" and "Rick" to name a few.

L-Gante then communicated with Papu DJ and began working together on some music, later he released "L-Gante RKT", the track garnered millions of views and was number one on the Billboard Argentine Hot 100. He became an international phenomenon after his 2020 song L-Gante RKT.

According to reggateon music critic Jose Luis  "the beats that L Gante creates with cumbia villera, with a delivery infused with that Argentine timbre, almost Italian-sounding in its sing-song rhythmic pattern, is so distinctive. He doesn´t sing like a Puerto Rican; he sings with a porteño accent, straight out of the villa, which gives his music authenticity, and I find genius."

In early 2021 he released more singles like "Pandillero" which has over 3 milion views on YouTube and "Tinty Nasty" which has an impressive 34 million views also on YouTube!

Premiering with Bizarrap, Argentina's most-listened  artist on Spotify in March 2021, "L-Gante: BZRP Music Sessions #38" gave him even more popularity with the very impressive and vibrant track got over 100 million views and counting.

At such a young age L-Gante's work rate is clearly very high as he has been consistenly releasing music, we will definitely be seeing more of him very soon. Like many artists who represent the language crude, he was initially scorned but as he's garnered more success he's also tapped into more commercial market, with such as Disney girl Tini. Their partnesrhip gave her much needed street cred and L-Gante, the chance to clean up his image and gain approval from the music establishment.

"We are proud people, and when we see L-Gante coming from the street, we get sentimental and attached to him because, as you can see, he was able to make his dreams come true. " says Reina. "He fought and struggled, but now he is on top, being heard all over the world, in places we thought he was not going to arrive, like Greece and Egypt. We can't really believe it!"

L-Gante makes his debut appearance on Friday 03 March in London. For discounted tickets redeem your LATINOLIFE voucher here https://pretix.eu/dpmclub/lgntldn/
