There are public figures who ‘do charity’ but few people in the spotlight take a stance on important issues, challenging the very establishment and media that laud them, to help give a voice to those without one. There are even fewer who do so fearlessly and consistently over the years. For over 30 years, Nicaraguan-born Bianca Jagger has campaigned for human rights, justice and the environment. Bianca Perez-Mora Macias married Mick Jagger in 1971.

Her beauty and charisma made her a style icon. However, rather than pursue a self-serving career, Bianca uses her influence to campaign for the most vulnerable, in Latin America and all over the world, and shine a light on injustices and atrocities often ignored by the media. In the 1980s, she worked to oppose US government intervention in Nicaragua after the Sandinista Revolution. Today, she denounces Daniel Ortega’s unconstitutional policies.

She was made Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador for the Abolition of the Death Penalty in 2003. She lends her voice and support wherever it is needed by those facing cruelty and injustice, whether it's prisoners on death row; whether it’s communities and indigenous tribes struggling to defend their land in the Brazilian Amazon, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua and elsewhere against illegal invasions of rancher and loggers, and encroachment by corporations; or whether it’s individuals facing torture and detention without trial in Guantanamo.

In 2005 Bianca launched the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, dedicated to defending human rights, achieving social justice and environmental protection. Last year, she launched a global campaign: ‘Ending Violence Against Women and Girls’ urging world leaders to include ending violence against women and girls in the Millennium Development Goals. Bianca is a ‘one off’, a glamorous Latin American who has poured her passion and pride into doing the right thing; an example of Latin American solidarity personified.
