Beef so tender, 'we could have cut it with a spoon.'

Tucked away in the heart of Bermondsey, you might not immediately equate the elegant red walls and sophisticated décor with your idea of a typical Argentine steakhouse. However, arriving on a Wednesday evening, it was clear from the dozen or so diners at the nearby tables that everyone was here for one reason: the meat.

After a couple of traditional empanadas to start - an Argentine version of the Cornish pasty - (spinach and cheese for me, humita, or sweetcorn, for my companion) and a portion of provoleta (provolone cheese: grilled and deliciously gooey) we got down to business, ordering a parillada mixta which seemed to be what everyone else was having, a mixed grill selection including Argentine sirloin, Portobello mushrooms, Argentine style pork sausage, and Spanish black pudding.

The portions were huge, and the beef – which we’d asked to be very rare – was bloody but unbelievably tender, we could have cut it with a spoon....! A varied wine menu, including some undisputed classics Catena Zapata and Finca Sophenia, helped wash it all down but we were still left wishing we could take home the leftovers.

Somehow we managed to find some room for desert: flan mixto, homemade crème caramel with generous dollops of cream and dulce de leche. Friendly staff and a laid back atmosphere made this a perfect mid-week location for an intimate dinner after work.
